Creating a Mini-Forest - Wilpstra Park

On Saturday May 13, an enthusiastic group of 75 volunteers converged on Wilpstra park with a goal to reshape the park into a more natural environment.  Community members, Scouts and Girl Guides, Town Council members, students and municipal workers joined together with CASL members in Stage 1 of the conversion of this park to a biodiverse habitat. With so many volunteers, especially so many young people, the excitement level was high as they worked together to create a new mini-forest.

This project was funded by the town of Plympton/Wyoming and supported by CASL.  Project coordinator Mike Smalls, who designed the layout and oversaw the purchase of the plant material, was extremely pleased with the turnout!

The upcoming Stage 2 will incorporate understory plants to help the mini-forest more successfully mimic the role of a natural forest in the newly created ecosystem.
